Afro-Mex History
The African Enslaved People’s Arrival in Mexico
In 1519 the Spanish first brought Africans to Mexico against their will to work in the agrarian and silver industries under often brutal conditions. Due to the pride and strong will of the African people, there were constant enslavement protests and runaways.
A known fact is that an enslaved young freedom fighter Gaspar Yanga established the first free African descendant community in all the Americas. Other Afro-Mexican communities in Mexico are Veracruz, and today the largest Afro-Mexican population is in the State of Guerrero.
We are proud that we have immersed ourselves in learning about these forgotten communities and people in order to bring awareness to the outside world of the richness & pride of their heritage and stories that still exist today. Join As You Wish Travel Club for the experience of a lifetime."
The African Descendants of Mexico are sometimes better known as the "forgotten people!"
Many people do not know that the Underground Railroad also entered into Mexico.
The government officials of Mexico restricted slavery in the 1820’s and finally abolished it in 1829, some thirty-four years before Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
A known fact is that the American government asked the Mexican government to return the runaway slaves that made it over the border. The Mexican government refused.
